Annual Conference Heidelberg, Germany, 31 May & 1 June 2007

Best Practices in Transfer of Science and Technology

Introduction

ASTP is pleased to invite you to come together with Technology Transfer Managers from across Europe on the occasion of its eighth Annual Conference to be held in Heidelberg, Germany, in a Region famous for its scenic beauty, architectural and cultural monuments, outstanding cuisine and excellent vintages! It is also easy to get to - in the heart of Europe and within easy reach of Frankfurt International Airport.

Program

The role of the Technology Transfer Manager is broadening. Increasingly universities are being seen as engines for regional and national economic growth. To be sure, we have to run Technology Transfer professionally and be experts in early stage technology commercialisation. However, at the same time we increasingly need to balance direct financial return to the university with the wider – and potentially far greater - benefits (profits, employment, innovation) made by existing businesses in our regions. This is a difficult balancing act – the more so given the expectations that there are on us to generate income.

This conference examines these issues along with many other current issues and balancing acts faced by us all in our roles as Technology Transfer Managers.  As always we have invited a large and diverse group of speakers who can speak to and help us all explore and debate these issues.  All speak from experience – we only invite those who are practitioners able to talk with authority and experience about a topic. The first ‘track’ of the conference takes a different format for this conference – structured as panel discussions based on topics suggested by our German colleagues.

In additional to the formal programme the Conference is also deliberately social. Much is to be gained from talking and knowing each other. We are increasingly a community  that is willing to be open and honest about our successes and mistakes – and to share ideas and experiences. We build in ample time for networking – and devise a social programme to encourage interaction. We thank AstraZeneca for kindly offering the cocktail on Thursday. Our events are as sociable as they are stimulating. We are pleased to welcome Hans Wigzell and Sachi Hatakenaka as our plenary speakers – both able to bring new perspectives on our roles and the way we work with important stakeholders. We are also delighted that Pat Jones, the new President of our sister Association, AUTM, is able to join us for the conference

The program has been finilised. Please click here for the program in the Annual Conference Brochure.

Networking events

* Social Program: Wednesday afternoon the 30th of May, the afternoon preceding the conference, ASTP offers an optional social program with a visit to the Heidelberg Technology Park and ExploHeidelberg, combined with a guided tour around the highlights of Heidelberg. This social program will start approximately at 1.30 PM and end around 6 PM at the Prinz Carl Palace.

Details of the Social Program:

At 1.30 we depart by coach to the Heidelberg Technology Park. This is a science park where international and national science institutes and biotech companies form a synergistic and collaborating bio-community. With its mixture of biotech, medtech and environmental technologies it has developed since its foundation in 1985 to an important impulse transmitter for the whole region. After a presentation by the CEO of the park, Dr. Klaus Plate, we will have a short tour around the park and a visit the ExploHeidelberg. Here we will have a guided walk and the opportunity to do some nice experiments.

We will then leave the Technology Park to visit some of the highlights of Heidelberg city.

* Welcome Cocktail: Wednesday evening, the 30th of May, every delegate is invited to join us for the Welcome Cocktail at the 'Spiegelsaal' of the Prinz Carl Palais, offered by the City of Heidelberg. The cocktail starts at 17.30 and ends around 20.00. This cocktail gives you the opportunity to meet speakers and other participants of the conference in advance for a first chat!

* Joint Dinner: On Thursday evening, the 1st of June we invite you to our traditional Annual Conference dinner. We will have a lovely dinner at one of the nicest and most historical restaurants in Heidelberg, the Heidelberger Kulturbrauerei. We will provide for transport to and from the restaurant.
