Munich 2001, Second Annual Conference ASTP

'Facing the Facts'

Introduction

Following the success of our first conference, the second annual conference of ASTP promises to be another memorable event.  Munich was chosen not only for it’s beauty as a city but for it’s significant contributions to the technology transfer sector.  The European headquarters of the European Patent Office is located here with a new facility scheduled to be constructed soon. Additionally, Munich is situated in the heart of the “Bavarian Valley” with its “Incubator,” which is emerging as a prolific catalyst to innovation in the Biotechnology field, bringing together the best of science, business and entrepreneurship from the region and beyond. An optional trip to this area is available prior to the start of the conference and we encourage everyone to go!

Another landmark to this year’s conference is the presentation of results on the first European Survey of Science-based Technology Transfer Facts and Figures.  Hundreds of surveys were sent throughout Europe to collect quantitative insights into the financial and economic impact for university technology transfer: patents, licences, start-ups, invention disclosures and contract research to name just a few of the issues queried on our survey.  The results will be discussed by European speakers as well as comparative examples given by experts from the United States who will address the problems they have overcome to gain their current knowledge.

At the heart of the conference are topics of universal importance such as the most recent developments to date coupled with the day to day problems to solve when managing university-industry technology transfer, e.g. internal organisation, patent law, and the specific and innovative complexities of strategic alliances and the valuation of ICT and biotech technologies.

Social Program

Wednesday, 30 May 2001, Visit to the ‘Bavaria Valley’

The BioTech-Region München is one of Europe’s most well known centres for biotechnology. It has made a name for itself through the special potential it offers for excellent biotechnological research and its targeted implementation in start-up companies and industry. The so called ‘Bavaria Valley’, centred in Martinsried, is developing at a particularly dynamic rate and has currently over 120 pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. A remarkable  number of new business are founded here every day, due to a first-rate scientific environment, a large number of international VC companies and attractive financing instruments provided by both the German Federal Government and the State of Bavaria. In the past three years the number of employees in the BioTech business rose from 300 to 2500 people. During a voluntary trip on Wednesday-afternoon, 30th of May, we will visit a selection of companies in the Incubator of Martinsried.
