Paris 2000, First Annual Conference ASTP

‘Best Practices in Transfer of Science and Technology’

Introduction

Technology transfer from the science base (universities and public research institutes) is a complex process, and will benefit from world-wide exchange of professional experience and expertise, coupled with personal networks. Within Europe, these interactions are of greater importance because of the different national legal and cultural environments. Therefore a European network that organises such interactions is needed.

Following a feasibility study and an informal meeting in Brussels in November, 1999, an European Association has been founded: The Association of European Science & Technology Transfer Professionals (ASTP).

Professionals dedicated to the mission "to professionalise and promote technology transfer between the European science base and industry" are invited to become members. ASTP is meant to foster technology transfer across all fields of science and technology. A concise feasibility study already activated more then 150 professionals, from 24 nearly all European countries, who showed their interest to become a member of this association, of whom more then 50% represent universities.

The first Annual conference of ASTP will exchange the most recent developments, methods and models for transfer of science & technology. After initial plenary overviews on the economic and political environment and recent studies and statistics this conference will focus on:

Patenting & Licensing
University start up companies
Strategic Alliances
Internet based technology transfer
Conditions for venture capital & Informal investors
University and Regional Development

The conference will end with a plenary discussion on how to manage a technology transfer Office.
