Advanced Licensing Skills
24 – 26 January 2007, Dublin

Introduction
Most Technology Transfer Offices are not short of good technology, they are short of good licensees. This is not surprising - it is much easier to apply for a patent than it is to find a licensee and this is one of the principal reasons why we typically (as a sector) license less than 20% of the patents we take out.
The Advanced Licensing Course focuses on licensing - the part of the technology transfer 'process' that starts after we've filed a patent and finishes once we've signed the deal. We assume that the decision has been taken to seek a license for the technology (rather than to exploit by means of a spin out). We then explore how best to identify potential licensees, persuade them that they need our technology and conclude equitable and watertight deals with them - in other words, effective market research, marketing and negotiation.
The course is designed for Technology Transfer professionals at universities and PRO's who have significant experience and an active caseload of their own. We are also opening the course to a limited number of managers from industry responsible for licensing in technologies from universities. In common with other ASTP courses, all sessions are led by experienced practitioners who have, between them, licensed hundreds of technologies.

The course is split into three days in which many aspects will be treated. The course includes:

Programme
The main features of the course are its informal style of presentation and interaction between participants. The sessions are a mixture of seminar-style talks and smaller, break-out groups to discuss and report back on specific case studies. During the feedback sessions the different results of all the groups are discussed and the speaker(s) – all of them experienced practitioners - add their own perspective. ‘You get out of the course, what you put into it’, so active participation is essential to gain as much information as possible as a delegate. Our aim is to create an informal and pleasant atmosphere during the course, so everyone feels comfortable and gets to know other delegates. The programme is finalised and can be seen by clicking here. For more detailed information on the sessions, please click here.
Social Programme
Besides the formal part, the course also has plenty of informal elements giving you the opportunity to meet other delegates and share knowledge. On Tuesday evening the 23rd, the course will start with the registration and a welcome cocktail from 18.30 at NovaUCD. This is the Innovation and Technology Transfer Centre at University College Dublin, which is located in a magnificent mid-18th century house. On Wednesday evening the 24th we invite all delegates to join us for dinner in the inner city of Dublin at the Gravity Bar. It is perched a the top of the famous Guiness Saint James's Gate Brewery and one of the most unique and popular bars in Ireland. Here you can have an unparralleled 360 degree view of Dublin and the surrounding area.
