Fundamentals of Technology Transfer
30 & 31 January, 1 February 2008

Vienna, Austria

This course is sold out!
Please contact us if you would like to be put on our wailing list, in case we will receive a cancellation.
The next course will be organized on 3 - 5 September 2008.

Introduction

This Fundamentals course is organized in association with Praxis, the Technology Transfer Training Programme in the UK. It aims at people who are recently new in the profession (for between six months and two years) - long enough to have taken on a few cases, have encountered difficulties and realize that they need to do some training! This course will examine the entire spinout process in detail and will be of most benefit to those who have already worked in technology transfer for at least six months. This three-day program covers most of the things that a technology transfer needs know and be able to do including:

- Finding and appraising new technologies within the university (encouraging disclosures and deciding when you should patent)
- The patent process & minimizing costs
- What industry actually wants in terms of new technologies - what turns them on and what turns them off
- Marketing and finding licensees
- Contract law as it relates to IP (recognizing the differing legislative environments within Europe)
- Structuring, negotiating and doing deals with licensees.

Content

The course is split into three days in which many aspects will be covered. Topics include:

  • Evaluating Technology Opportunities

  • Case Studies

  • Research Grants and Contracts - Our role in protecting foreground and background IP

  • IP Primer: Patents - patent law and process - when to seek protection, patent strength, patent agents and patent costs

  • Non-patent IP - Copyright, design rights, trademarks

  • Contract Law - what you need to keep yourself out of trouble

  • Engaging Industry - what they want and do not want from us - With Panel Q & A

  • Anatomy of a License Agreement - its purpose structure and essential terms

  • What you can license and what you cannot - deals you should not do

  • Marketing technology - finding and communicating with potential licensees

Program

The main features of the course are its informal style of presentation and interaction between participants. The sessions are a mixture of seminar-style talks and smaller, break-out groups to discuss and report back on specific case studies. During the feedback sessions the different results of all the groups are discussed and the speaker(s) – all of them experienced practitioners - add their own perspective. ‘You get out of the course, what you put into it’, so active participation is essential to gain as much information as possible as a delegate. Our aim is to create an informal and pleasant atmosphere during the course, so everyone feels comfortable and gets to know other delegates.
