overview Creating successful spin-outs is designed for Technology Transfer managers whose portfolio includes expertise and technologies that may be best commercialised in a spin-out company. We explore what kinds of technologies are best commercialised in this way and the role of TT managers in setting the initial business strategy and working with the founding academics to build a well-financed, yet sustainable spin-out company that can act as a great platform for commercialising the technology – as well as providing a financial return to the university.
The course is highly interactive, where you will learn through case studies and role plays facilitated by those who have been actively involved in building, financing and managing successful university spin-outs.
content The course offers the following topics:
- the role of TT manager as initial commercial manager - business planning and guiding the initial business model - knowing how and when to approach investors - the characteristics of different types of businesses – ‘bootstrap’, high growth, IP based - financial planning and strategy - the legal issues involved, including IP agreements - building an effective and sustainable management team
course programme
The main features of the course are its informal style of presentation and interaction between participants. The sessions are a mixture of seminar-style talks and smaller break-out groups to discuss and report back on specific case studies. During the feedback sessions, the different results of all the groups are discussed with the speaker(s) adding their own perspectives. ‘What you get out of the course is what you put into it’, so active participation is essential to gain as much information as possible. Our aim is to create an informal atmosphere during the course, and encourage everyone to network.

The three-day course includes: coffee/tea, refreshments, lunches, joint dinner on Wednesday and course materials. The fee does not include overnight accommodation. Each participant is responsible for their own hotel booking.
registration The maximum number of participants is 40. For online payment by creditcard, no administration cost will be charged to the course fee, however an administration cost of €25 will be charged if payment is done through bankwire. cancellation policy Only 50% of the course fee will be refunded if a written cancellation is received before the 31st of August 2012. However no refunds will be possible after the 31st of August 2012. Substitutions by a colleague working at the same institution, may be made up to 3 weeks before the course and an administration cost of €95 will be charged.
